However, water conservation is not just an issue for commercial producers; mid-size and small goat farms can also make a meaningful impact. With the practical and inexpensive changes outlined below, small to mid-size goat farms can do their part to conserve water and save money for years to come.
The Essential Impact of Water Conservation on Goat Farming Operations
Water management directly affects both profitability and heard health. Proper hydration supports overall goat health and mineral absorption. A 110 lb goat requires 2 to 4 gallons of water per day under maintenance conditions. In hot climates they require even more water. Inefficient watering systems such as hand watering daily, overflow, and human error (forgetting). Can have a deep impact on the health and financial support of a herd. It is imperative to ensure goats are provided with unlimited fresh water while eliminating waste.
Automated Watering Systems
Forgetting to turn the hose on or off can cause big issues on a goat ranch. Forgetting to turn water on can mean reduced water levels in troughs causing younger goats and short breeds to be unable to reach the surface of the water. In a worst case scenario troughs can completely dry up in a few days depending on the climate and weather. It is best practice to check troughs daily, however family emergencies and unforeseen events can lead to last minute plans. Automated watering systems can alleviate both of these issues. Our goat water systems
At Hillis Family Farms we have installed Galvanized Little Giant Trough-O-Matic float valves for our pasture stock tanks. We chose the galvanized float valve housings over the plastic for durability and reliability. For our indoor water needs we are installing Little Giant Automatic Water Bowls that are wall mounted to keep them clean and free of bedding and manure. The wall mounted water bowls come with a drain plug in the bottom of the bowl which allows for easy clean out. The low volume of the bowl reduces water usage, saves time, and reduces the likelihood of injuring your back flipping troughs during regular cleanings.
Water Point Volume
One of the best ways to conserve water is using low-volume watering points. This is where the automatic waterers are a must have in order to keep low volume water points full. Storing less water on hand for goats slows evaporation during hot summer months. Large open troughs loose significant amounts of water to evaporation, especially in dry climates like Colorado and surrounding states.
Water Trough Placement
The location of your water troughs can make or break the quality of the water in the tank. Positioning water troughs in the sun can heat up the water, bloom algae, and drastically increase evaporation. Troughs should be placed in the shade if possible. This will reduce or eliminate algae, slow evaporation, and help the water maintain a cool refreshing temperature for goat herds.
Maintaining Your Water System and Repairing Leaks
With any ranch equipment mechanical or otherwise, pretty much everything involves maintenance. There should be periodic checks for leaks and the necessary repairs made. Most leaky hose fittings or pipe connections can be solved with a few wraps of plumbers tape. Troughs and floats should be checked regularly for damage and cleanliness. Shut off valves should be in the off position for any unused water points. This will keep water from stagnating and becoming a breeding ground for mosquitos, flies, and other hazards to your goats.

While most technology is reserved for deep pocket livestock operations, there are options available for smaller goat operations. An inline water meter may be installed on the primary water line to your water systems. This will allow for leak detection and enable small ranchers to form a baseline for a herds average water intake. For goat ranchers operating as a business entity this will allow water usage to be calculated and charged to your business entity as an operational cost.
Another advanced feature we plan to install at Hillis Family Farms is an automatic water shutoff valve. An automatic water shutoff valve can be configured to provide flowing water during daylight hours. Then at night the valve will close. Leaks are more likely to be discovered during daytime chores. This allows for troughs to stay topped off, while also protecting the ranch from expensive overnight leaks if they are overlooked.
